A few days ago, we published a story about rumors of a redesigned SL debuting as early as 2006. Over the weekend, we received an email from our good friend Vincent over at Autoblog.nl that adds further fuel to new SL fire.
It turns out, Autoblog.nl reported a similar story a few days ago as well. According to to their article, the new SL will look similar to the current production SL, as opposed to receiving a new SLK/SLR nose as earlier reported. The only exterior enhancement we can expect to see will be a slightly altered front apron as well as slightly modified rear taillights. The major upgrades you can expect to see are under the hood. For the SL500, the article indicates it will be receiving Mercedes' new 5.5-Liter 388 horsepower V8, as opposed to the 5.0-Liter 302 horsepower V8 it's currently powered by. In addition, the article also confirms our previous report that we can expect to see a SL350 model, powered by a 3.5-Liter 270 horsepower V6. Both models are expected to receive Mercedes' 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic transmission.
Personally, I think seeing a slightly enhanced SL is much more likely than seeing a completely redesigned SL as Autospies reported. If the changes do happen, I'd expect to see them for the 2007 model year, to coincide with the release of the new S-Class. As always, stay tuned and we'll keep you posted if we hear anything new.
