Research is the motor of progress. It has a long-standing tradition at Daimler where it occupies a key position. Findings from our own research have always set the pace in the development of new vehicles – and this is why we officially established a dedicated Research unit in the early 1970s.

With our innovations, we have been setting standards on a global scale – and will continue to do so in the future. Research has always been the basis of our success, as borne out by history which goes back to the founding fathers of our company: in 1885, Gottlieb Daimler installed his high-speed internal combustion engine in a two-wheeler, the Riding Car. Independently of Daimler, Carl Benz presented his Patent Motor Car in 1886 – the world’s first holistic design of an automobile. Nobody talked about research cars in either case at the time but both the Riding Car and the Patent Motor Car marked the starting point of our tradition of creating groundbreaking vehicle concepts in order to obtain findings for the development of tomorrow’s motor vehicles...

Los Angeles – A car with extended, elegant lines which can change its form at the touch of a button and adapt to the requirements of its owners at any time – this is the automotive vision that Mercedes-Benz is presenting at the Los Angeles Design Challenge, which is being held for the fourth time as part of the 2007 L.A. When required, this Mercedes of the future can take on the form of a fast highway cruiser, quickly metamorphose into a compact city car, or become a roomy one-seater or economical two-seater, depending on the transport capacity needed. This is made possible by the magnetic control elements of the SilverFlow, a futuristic study by Mercedes-Benz, which take just seconds to configure the car required from tiny metallic particles...

Alternative Drive Systems At Daimler AG For The Mobility Of The Future
Posted November 21, 2007 At 3:00 PM CST

Group photo: In the 1970s and 1980s, Mercedes-Benz tested different propulsion concepts – with a correspondingly large fleet of test vehicles. The photo was taken on the test track in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim in 1981.

The internal combustion engine seems the perfect drive system for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Since the invention of the gasoline-powered automobile in 1886 by Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, each working independently of the other, and the subsequent introduction of the diesel engine, it has become the global standard. This has been helped by the many advantages it offers: today’s engines are powerful and refined, relatively compact, durable, and require little maintenance. Energy supplies in the form of fuel can easily be transported and replenished as and when required. The range of distances that can be traveled is large, and there is a dense network of gas stations. The vehicles are easy to operate and offer great flexibility of use. Additionally, over the years, the drive systems have managed to keep pace with ever more stringent environmental regulations. Daimler AG and its predecessor companies have played major roles in this development...
