Authorities Seize Mercedes That May Have Belonged To Saddam
Posted on May 19, 2006 at 3:00 PM CST

Saddam HusseinThe Associated Press is reporting today that federal customs officials have seized a Mercedes-Benz they believe may have belonged to former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

Although the model isn't specified, the white Mercedes, now owned by Army reservist First Sgt. William Von Zehle, is equipped with loudspeakers, hidden microphones, and "a series of pipes that shoot flames out the side of the car."

In a series of interviews last summer, Von Zehle was quoted as saying he bought the car for about $5,000 in 2003 while serving in Iraq, and went on to state: "I can't prove it, but yeah, this was Saddam Hussein's car."

Authorities are currently holding the vehicles as a possible war trophy while investigating whether or not Von Zehle violated federal smuggling laws or the executive order barring the importation of property from the former Iraqi regime.

So far, no charges have been filed, and customs officials have not indicated what will happen to Saddam's former Merc.
