According to the financial wunderkinds over at Bloomberg, Merecedes-Benz and other German automakers may be considering building a plant for spare part production in Egypt.
The article is based on a recent interview given by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, in which he was quoted as saying: "We have learned today about a project by German companies including Mercedes and others. They want to start a large project in Egypt for spare parts and other services."
Mubarak, who gave the interview after wrapping up talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, concluded by saying: "We're expecting her [Angela Merkel] in Egypt soon, so that Egypt will also become a center for spare-part production for large companies.''
In her own interview, Merkel stated that German-Egyptian ties are "very close," but failed to elaborate on any planned investments.
We'll keep you posted if we hear anything new; in the meantime, head over to Bloomberg for the full article.
