The rumor mill is circulating this afternoon that Mercedes may be planning a convertible variant of its flagship S-Class sedan. According to Monsters and Critics, who cite Auto Motors und Sport as their source, we may see a four door S-Class convertible making its debut at the Detroit Auto Show this January. The vehicle will be targeted at the same audience that opts for the standard S-Class, and will strive to "move the brand up-market" and "revive buyer interest in automotive comfort rather than in high performance."
Although I find the last two statements absurd, due to the fact that Mercedes is already one of the most coveted brands in existence as well as the fact that Mercedes models already emphasize both performance and comfort, seeing an S-Class convertible come to fruition would be interesting, to say the least.
An absence of spy shots and no previous rumors lead me to believe, however, that an S-Class convertible is purely speculation at this point.
Of course, we'll be sure to keep you posted if we hear anything new; in the meantime, head over to Monsters and Critics for the full article.
Note: A special thanks to CWW Automotive Design, whose photoshopped two-door S-Class Cabriolet pictured above was the closest thing I could find to the rumored upcoming Mercedes S-Class convertible.
