Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster (via TimesOnline)
Reviewer's rating:  four stars

"I am more familiar than most with the original coupé version, having driven one nonstop - apart from a health and safety enforced break in Copenhagen (which wasn’t as long as the TV pictures suggested) - all the way from London to Oslo. It took 24 hours.  Apart from the woeful brakes, I liked it very much. Unlike most hypercars, this one was not built by an enthusiast, in a shed, on an industrial estate, and as a result it never gave even the tiniest hint that it was about to break down or disintegrate or explode.  It was also very, very fast. At one point, in Germany obviously, I hit 200mph. And there was more to come. This was, and remains, the fastest automatic car in the world.

Smart Updates Its Model Range To Include Micro Hybrid Drive
Posted July 11, 2008 At 4:35 PM CST by C. Danielson

Exterior view of the smart fortwo micro hybrid drive (mhd), side

Have you been considering a new 45 kW/61 bhp petrol-powered smart fortwo but were envious of the micro hybrid drive (mhd) found on its 52kW/71 bhp big brother?  Your jealousy can officially be laid to rest my dear readers, because starting In October of 2008, both models will now come standard with the fuel-saving technology.  In total, mhd along with its user-friendly automatic start-stop system reduces NEDC fuel consumption by an average of 8 percent, while in the city, fuel savings of up to 20 percent are possible.

As if that isn't enough excitement in and of itself for those of you considering a new fortwo, the smart fortwo family as a whole is receiving a number of updates as well.  For starters, all models will now feature a new instrument cluster with an enhanced LCD display.  In addition, two new exterior colors - "rally red" and "grey metallic" - are available, as is a reworked "design red" interior color option in the passion line...

It's Official:  World Premier Of The Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series

Exterior view of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series, front and side

After countless spy photos and endless speculation, the rumors can finally be put to rest.  Today, ladies and gentlemen, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series has officially made its world debut, and its spec sheet is a beautiful, beautiful thing.

Take, for example, the SL65 AMG Black Series' 6.0-liter V12.  From its 5,980 cubic capacity, the SL Black generates a maximum power of 493 kW/670 hp at 5400 rpm and an electronically limited torque of 1000 Newtonmetres between 2200 and 4200 rpm.  Without a limiter, the biturbocharged hand-built twelve-cylinder would achieve a maximum torque of 1200 Nm. How does that translate into real world performance?  The SL65 Black Series can reach 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds, 0-124 mph in 11.0 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 186mph...

eMercedesBenz Feature: The Mercedes-Benz 500 K, Elegance On Four Wheels
Posted July 10, 2008 At 2:45 PM CST by C. Danielson

Mercedes-Benz 500 K "Spezial-Roadster", 1936.

Two new – and very different – Mercedes models were displayed at the Berlin Motor Show in March 1934. One was the 130, Mercedes-Benz's first production car with a rear-mounted four-cylinder engine which developed 26 hp from a displacement of 1.3 liters. The other was the 500 K, an imposing, elegant sports car with supercharged eight-cylinder engine; with the supercharger engaged, it developed 160 hp from a displacement of 5,018 cc.

The 500 K was the successor to the 380 presented only one year earlier, and a descendant of the tremendously powerful, supercharged S, SS, SSK and SSKL sports cars – genuine muscle cars, as we would call them today, and virtually invincible in motor sports...

Mercedes-Benz Review Roundup:  The SLK350 And CLC Sport Coupe
Posted July 10, 2008 At 11:20 AM CST by C. Danielson

Exterior views of the Mercedes-Benz SLK350 and CLC Sport Coupe

While it may not be the most sizable Mercedes Review Roundup installment we've ever brought you, today's segment still provides a satisfying look at two of the newest models to make their way out of Stuttgart:  the new-generation SLK350 and the new CLC Sport Coupe.  To see what the reviewers thought of either, you can find an excerpt from the first review below as well as the full collection of articles immediately after the jump.

Enjoy.

Mercedes-Benz SLK350 (via CNET)
Reviewer's rating:  7.8/10

"As we would expect from a plus-50-grand roadster from Mercedes-Benz, the interior of the 2009 SLK350 is designed for luxury. All surfaces except the buttons are soft. And although it's a roadster, you don't have to put the top up to stay warm. Our SLK350 had Mercedes-Benz's Air Scarf feature, which blows warm air on your neck from a vent in the head rest. We took it out on one particularly fog-bound and clammy day, San Francisco in the summer, and drove for hours with the top down, and the heated seats and Air Scarf kept us perfectly comfortable..."

eMercedesBenz Feature:  The "American Mercedes"
Posted July 9, 2008 At 8:40 AM CST by T. Philips

The “American Mercedes”, unveiled at the National Automobile Show in New York. This copy of a 45 hp is the first Mercedes produced in the United States by the Daimler Manufacturing Company.

Today the USA is a nation of cars. This was far from being the case 100 years ago: At that time, motorization was still very much in its infancy. Europe was ahead by quite some distance and led the way in terms of technology. Thus it’s no surprise that old-world automobiles were highly coveted in America but were expensive due to shipping costs and customs duties. The answer provided by Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft was a car produced in New York, the “American Mercedes”, which was basically a reproduction of the 45 hp Mercedes. It first appeared at the National Automobile Show in New York in January 1905. The first vehicle was delivered in 1906, at a price of 7,500 dollars. What reads so easily in retrospect has a long history behind it...

AutoWeek Names Mercedes-Benz E320 BlueTEC One Of "Top Five Fuel-Efficient Cars You Actually Want To Drive"
Posted July 9, 2008 At 8:00 AM CST by T. Philips

Although here at eMercedesBenz we've managed to extol the virtues of the Mercedes E320 BlueTEC on many occasions due to its unique mixture of luxury, refinement and fuel efficiency, that hasn't stopped AutoWeek from further validating our fond sentiments toward the model.  The publication recently named the clean diesel-powered E-Class one of its "Top 5 Fuel-Efficient Cars You Actually Want to Drive," based not on its impressive fuel consumption of just 32 miles per gallon, but rather on its combination of "fuel-efficiency, styling and impressive driving dynamics..."

As promised, here is the second of two Mercedes Review Roundups on this lovely July afternoon, with two more Mercedes models - the CLC Sport Coupe and the C63 AMG Estate - being put through their paces for your reading enjoyment.  As is the case with all our Review Roundup segments, you can find an excerpt from the first review below as well as the full collection of articles immediately after the jump.

Mercedes-Benz CLC220 CDI (via Auto Express)
Reviewer's rating:  three stars

"The fast-growing Mercedes model line-up now comprises three CL-badged coupés – all of which fit very different budgets.  At the top of the pile is the luxury CL, with the distinctive four-door CLS following close behind. Both have proved so popular that the company has come up with a new name – the CLC – to describe its latest three-door C-Class..."

Mercedes-Benz Review Roundup:  The F700 Research Vehicle And R320 BlueTEC
Posted July 8, 2008 At 12:35 PM CST by C. Danielson

Exterior views of the Mercedes-Benz F700 Research Vehicle and the R320 BlueTEC

It's been five days since we last brought you one of our famous Mercedes Review Roundup installments, more than enough time to elicit painful withdrawal symptoms from those of you fixated on reading the latest Mercedes reviews.  But not to worry, ladies and gentlemen, because today we have a grand total of two Review Roundup segments, the combination of which should be sufficient to satisfy even the most intense of your review cravings.

The first models to be scrutinized for your reading enjoyment?  That honor goes to the Mercedes F700 Research Vehicle and the R320 BlueTEC, with a total of three publications weighing in on vehicles.  As always, you can find an excerpt from the first review below as well as the full collection of articles immediately after the jump.

Mercedes-Benz F700 Research Vehicle
(via Drive)
Reviewer's rating:  Unspecified

"If the Mercedes-Benz F700 sitting ready for us to drive on a sun-bathed racetrack not far from the southern Spanish city of Seville is a reliable indication of how the automotive game is set to progress, the up-market sedan beyond 2020 still will have palatial levels of accommodation and outstanding comfort. However, via the application of advanced petrol-electric hybrid driveline technology it will be a good deal less taxing on the environment than those on the forecourts of today's Mercedes-Benz dealerships.  That's the overriding impression you get when you slide in behind the steering wheel of the big F700, turn the key and set off down the road with a hearty nudge of the throttle..."

Mercedes-Benz UK Launches New CLC Dream Test Drive Game

Mercedes-Benz CLC Dream Test Drive screenshot

Visitors to the Mercedes-Benz UK website now have another means by which to sample the traits of the new Mercedes CLC, courtesy of a downloadable game entitled the "CLC Dream Test Drive."  Unfortunately I can't divulge too many details of the game, due to the fact it requires a PC to function properly (here at eMercedesBenz we use Macs), but I can tell you that it's free, and that it heralds itself as "the next best thing to the real thing."

I'll have to take their word for it, but for those of you using Windows, you can download it and find out for yourself at the official CLC Dream Test Drive microsite...
