Detroit Auto Show Preview:  The Mercedes-Benz Vision GL 420 BLUETEC

It's no secret DaimlerChrysler is investing heavily in the diesel market here in the U.S., already introducing a BLUETEC Mercedes-Benz E-Class model to American consumers along with CDI versions of the M-, R- and GL-Class.  To further highlight their commitment to diesel, a fuel that the latest J.D. Power study "Global Outlook For Diesel" forecasts will power more than 15 percent of new vehicles sold in North America by 2015, DaimlerChrysler has revealed today the Vision GL 420 BLUETEC, a concept based closely on the current Mercedes GL420.

Boasting a powerful diesel V8 engine developing 290 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque, the Vision GL 420 BLUETEC manages to combine power and fuel efficiency, with fuel consumption expected to weigh in at an impressive 24 miles per gallon.  In addition, thanks to its clean diesel technology, the Vision GL 420 complies with the stringent BIN 5 emission standard, easily placing it among the cleanest diesels in the world...

That's A Wrap:  Mercedes-Benz USA Ends 2006 With An All Time Sales Record Of 248,080 Vehicles Sold

Mercedes-Benz LogoDecember financials are in, and for the final month of 2006, Mercedes-Benz USA reported a decrease in sales of 9.9 percent with 28,115 new units sold. This figure marks the second highest sales month on record for the U.S. Mercedes division, second only to December of 2005. 

As for 2006's total sales figures, Mercedes-Benz USA achieved its thirteenth consecutive year of sales growth, increasing the number of new vehicles sold 10.5 percent to 248,080 units.  The division noted tremendous success throughout the year from a number of new models, including the S-Class and GL-Class, while further sales momentum will undoubtedly result from additional new model offerings, some of which include the CL-Class and Mercedes' recently-expanded diesel SUV lineup.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Named Semperit Irish Van Of The Year 2007

In awards news, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has just been named the "Semperit Irish Van of the Year 2007" by the Irish Motoring Writers Association, edging out the Ford Transit and Fiat Ducato by two and seven points, respectively.

The decision came after the seven voting members of the Irish Motoring Writers Association evaluated a number of vehicles in the commercial segment and analyzed each based on value-for-money, reliability, versatility and lasting residual value; after which the Sprinter emerged the victor...

Auto Express Predicts The Future:  Another Look At The New Mercedes Gullwing

Auto Express Group Test:  The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Versus The Lexus LS

Coming off its horrid showing last month in Car and Driver's "Luxury Sedan Showdown", a review that placed it fifth among five vehicles tested, Auto Express decided to give the new Lexus LS another chance to improve on its less than stellar performance by granting it a rematch with the current reigning champion in the segment:  the Mercedes S550.

Unfortunately for the Lexus LS, the results from Auto Express' review closely mimicked the sentiment's held by Car and Driver.  The verdict, for those deliberating between the two...

Recall Alert:  Some Mercedes Models Recalled For Problems With Wipers

DaimlerChrysler has announced that some Mercedes models are being recalled, due to a possible malfunction with the windscreen wipers.  According to the company, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, B-Class and C-Class station wagons produced between May 2005 and May 2006 are the three models affected, the majority of which were sold in Germany.

"A switch for the windscreen wiper will be replaced," a DaimlerChrysler spokesman said today.  He then went on to add that a possible lack off insulation in the switch could cause the front and back windscreen wipers to fail...
