Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG F1 Safety Car Driving Shot Front and Side View

If you're an avid F1 fan, you'll be seeing an all-new safety car this race season.  The Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG has been named the latest FIA safety car, and will serve its duty protecting the F1 drivers starting March 9th at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Of course, taking a stock CLK 63 AMG and adding some decals doesn't make it a true safety car, so to help deal with the fast-paced conditions, Mercedes has added a few tweaks to boost the CLK's performance.  Powered by the standard CLK 63 AMG's 481 horsepower V8, the new CLK safety car is endowed with an aftermarket exhaust system, a high performance radiator, two engine oil coolers , and a larger auxiliary transmission oil cooler...

Posted on February 28, 2006 at 11:30 AM CST

As is the mandatory requirement at these type of shindigs, Dieter Zetsche, Daimler Chrysler CEO and head of the Mercedes Car Group, took the stage in Geneva today.

After making his first appearance in a 1971 AMG Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3 racecar and his second aboard the newly-introduced Mercedes Automatic bike, Zetsche preached a message of diversity and environmental awareness. Here's what Dieter had to say at the show:  "AMG builds automotive powerplants that many people dream about. Others see the bicycle as the best solution for individual mobility. We, on the other hand, believe that the key is having the right product mix."

We got a tip this morning from one of our readers pointing us to a story our good friends over at Autoblog just ran.

It turns out, Grubine, a small village in one of Croatia's poorest regions, likely holds the record for per capita Mercedes ownership. Among the city's 800 inhabitants, a total of 117 Mercedes are owned. The most notable is a 1952 Mercedes 170 SD owned by Vjeko Lasic, one of only eight in the world...

World Premiere Of The Mercedes CLS 350 CGI
Posted on February 24, 2006 at 8:40 AM CST

Mercedes has announced today that they will be adding a new member to the CLS family, dubbed the Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 CGI.

The CLS 350 CGI, or Stratified-Charged Gasoline Injection if you're not the acronym-inclined type, is the world's first vehicle sporting a petrol engine to feature piezoelectric direct injection and spray-guided combustion.  Or in plain English, the CLS has more power than a conventional CLS 350, all while consuming less fuel.  Sound too good be to true?  Read on my skeptics...

Tag Heuer Unveils New SLR Chronograph
Posted on February 22, 2006 at 10:45 AM CST

Tag Heuer SLR for Mercedes-Benz WatchWhile browsing our sources today, I stumbled upon a story that I somehow failed to miss last week.

It turns out that Tag Heuer, purveyor of fine Swiss timepieces, has released a follow up to their widely successful "SLR Chronograph" which made its debut at Baselworld in 2004. The newly-introduced Tag Heuer SLR for Mercedes-Benz features "push buttons that are boldly positioned on the top of the case and ergonomically inclined at 45 degrees; a timekeeping scale that is audaciously placed inside the case on a rotating, mechanic, unidirectional ring driven by a second crown at 9 o’clock; and an exterior bezel elegantly polished in black finish and engraved 'SLR.'"  Furthermore, the watch features ten double index diamond facets all set by hand, and to complete the package, the Mercedes-Benz and Tag Heuer logos are discreetly displayed on the watch's dial...

Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Aeroacoustics testing in a wind tunnel

As anyone familiar with a soft-top convertible knows, the joys of being able to put your vehicle's top down on a warm summer day are immense - the wind gently tossing your hair to and fro', the sun shining brightly down on your face...

But what happens when it's time for a little peace and quiet? Sure you can put the top up, but with just cloth protecting you from the elements, it often sounds just as noisy as it did with the top down.

Enter the Mercedes-Benz SLK's Vario-Roof, a system first introduced in 1996 that miraculously transforms the SLK from a hard-top coupe to a roadster in a mere 20 seconds.  Gone are the deafening wind noises and vibrations; gone are those damn leaks every time you take your baby to the local car wash...

As you can probably tell from my lack of posting, it's been another tremendously slow day for Mercedes news; however shoveling the 8+ inches of snow we received yesterday has managed to keep me somewhat preoccupied.

While taking a brake from my outdoor activities, I did manage to find one story today that I had to bring you - it's actually an update to story we brought you way back in October of last year...
