Mercedes-Benz Review Roundup Part One:  The C63 AMG

Although we may have fallen a little behind in our Mercedes review coverage as of late (all right, so maybe that's a bit of an understatement), not to worry, because we're making up for it today.  Even as you read this, we're hard at work catching up on the numerous MB reviews published over the past couple weeks, including the many sent to us by you, our beloved readers.

But that's not all.  As you'll notice, we're also introducing a new format for our "Review Roundup" segment - one that we believe will make it far easier to see what other reviewers thought of the Mercedes they were charged with testing. Unlike before, where a concise one or two sentence snapshot of each review was all that our Review Roundup offered, you'll now have a much clearer view of the how the model in question scored; a better perspective of who published the review; and longer, more informative excerpts from each of the actual articles.   We think it's a substantial improvement over the prior format; hopefully you'll agree.

As for the first articles to be featured in our new Review Roundup format, that honor goes to three reviews of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, sent to us by good friends Monk and Shiv.  As always gentlemen, we sincerely appreciate it.

Reviewer's rating:  four stars

"There's little if any doubt this is, by a margin, the best AMG four-door ever. Indeed, were it not for the fact that yours truly drove the latest SL 63 AMG just a week or so before the C63 soiree (at the former's international launch), we would have confidently dropped the four-door qualifier. Yep, it really is that good."

"Driving the Mercedes is an addictive experience. Turn the key and the 6.2-litre V8 bellows into life, while blipping the throttle causes the whole car to rock! No rival is as dramatic, but then none has 451bhp and 600Nm of torque, either. Overtaking is a breeze and the C63 is very tractable, yet can also sprint from 0 to 100mph in less than 10 seconds. It’s therefore a shame the seven-speed auto can be hesitant, hunting between ratios instead of letting the engines plentiful torque do the work. As for handling, the heavy AMG loses out to the scalpel sharp BMW M3, needing more lock in corners, and proving a little harsher in terms of ride. But it is every bit as involving and even more characterful, with fantastic body control, poise, agility and that mighty engine. This is a real driver’s car."

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG (via Top Gear)
Reviewer's rating:  Unspecified

"The steering is pin-sharp and prone to kickback on the broken Spanish tarmac, the seats are deep, hip- and haunch-throttling buckets, and the delivery from that engine is both too much for the rear tyres in most situations and one of the most life-affirming bits of machinery I've ever encountered.

It's not an easy car to drive fast, to be honest. You don't relax with it, or ever calm down enough to get your heart rate down below imminent-heart-attack levels. In fact, the C63 can be especially cruel on these fast, sweeping Spanish roads that often chuck in desperately unsettling craters mid-corner, or a big lump somewhere uncompromising.

The C63 is so stiff, that at one point, braking down from a fast straight into a 35mph left, the car hit a bump and I hit the roof. Traveling quickly on a very bumpy, treacherously cambered road like this in a C63 is not for the faint of heart, or the particularly sound of head.

Bizarrely for an auto AMG, this actually feels more like a racing car than any of the others [BMW M3, Lexus IS-F, Audi RS4] here."
