Another story brought to our attention this morning - this time by our good friend Shiv - is a recent article published by Automobile magazine that provides some unique insight into the future of Maybach.

It's no secret that Maybach's attempt to compete with Rolls Royce has been less than successful, with sales totaling 146 units in the U.S. last year:  about one-third of their competitor's sales.  But as the article points out, all is not lost at the premium luxury division.  According to a Maybach insider:  "The Exelero show car did more for us than all the tweaks to the 57/62 series combined..."

Although it seems like only yesterday the world was introduced to the Mercedes M-Class, on May 21st, the luxury SUV will be celebrating its 10 year birthday.  Produced at the Mercedes plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the M-Class marked a significant historical event for Mercedes - it was the first time a model destined for world distribution that was produced outside the company's home country of Germany.  Since then, production at the facility has expanded, with three models - the new M-Class, the GL-Class, and the R-Class - all starting life in Alabama...

Mercedes Flambé: C-Class Goes Up In Flames At DTM Presentation In Düsseldorf
Posted April 23rd, 2007 At 10:00 AM CST

I don't know how we managed to overlook this story, but in case you missed it (as we did), spectators at a DTM presentation in Düsseldorf witnessed an insanely-hot show last Monday courtesy of Mercedes' Bruno Spengler.  During the presentation, Spengler, who was piloting a 2002 CLK DTM clad in a 2008 Mercedes C-Class DTM shell, rocked a few doughnuts for the crowd in the middle of his run, an act that apparantly caused the rear brake to overheat.

The result is a C-Class cooked to what appears to be medium to medium well; thankfully no one was injured, and the DTM presentation continued as planned...

Going through our inbox this bright Friday morning an astute reader by the name of Eric tipped us off to an article published by Inside Line - one which looks at the 2010 Mercedes E-Class.  The article is based on recent Auto Bild renderings of the upcoming model, and states pretty much what you see in the picture.

Now With More Sportiness:  Mercedes Enhances The CLK Range With A New Sport Edition
Posted April 19th, 2007 At 8:40 AM CST

Exterior view of the Mercedes-Benz CLK Sport Edition, front and side shot

When the 2008 Mercedes C-Class and its dramatically sportier design were unveiled to the world, quietly sulking in the shadows was the CLK-Class, a model that up until the new C's premier was without question the sportier of the two.  Distraught at the thought of losing market share to its four-door counterpart, the CLK approached Mercedes about its dilemma, and their response was simple:  create a new sport package to add an enhanced level of "sportiness" to both the coupe and cabriolet models...

A Pair Of Reviews:  Testers Weigh In On The Mercedes SLR McLaren 722 Edition And The CL550
Posted April 18th, 2007 At 10:00 AM CST

Exterior views of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition and the CL550

Just when you thought the reviews had ended, two new Mercedes reviews have surfaced - reviews which look at both the SLR McLaren 722 Edition and the CL550.

The first review, published by Motor Trend, details the publication's trip to the oil-rich land of Dubai and their accompanying time spent with the 650 horsepower SLR 722 Edition.  As has been the case with virtually all previous reviews of the model, the reviewers praised the 722's power but criticized both its stiff ride and braking characteristics.  Of course, seeing as how all 150 units of the limited edition are spoken for, reviews are pretty much irrelevant at this point save for the second-hand market...
