The Union Saga At Mercedes' Tuscaloosa Plant Continues
Posted on April 24, 2006 at 12:10 PM CST

Exterior Shot of Mercedes-Benz Star at Mercedes-Benz MuseumA few weeks ago we told you about an attempt that was being made to form a union at the Mercedes plant in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The efforts to are being led by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, who are attempting to unionize after similar efforts by the UAW failed in 1999 and 2000.

Unfortunately for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, UAW isn't supporting the latest unionization attempts. In fact, they've gone as far as filing a complaint claiming they, not a rival union, have the right to organize workers at Mercedes' Alabama location. In addition, the UAW has since opened a temporary office in Tuscaloosa County in an effort to jump-start organizing efforts that had stalled the past few years.

Don Barker, the man leading the machinist's efforts, disagrees with the UAW and believes his union has a right to the Mercedes' workers. According to Barker: "The UAW showed up here on March 27, saying they had an active campaign going. They have not had an active campaign here since 2000. We feel they are hurting our efforts."

To resolve the issue, Barker will join other representatives from the machinists and auto workers in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday as the national AFL-CIO holds mediation proceedings to try and settle the dispute.

You gotta love unions - always bitching about something.
